The Prama Foundation Dementia Friendly Church project is looking at helping churches across the UK to become Dementia Friendly.
What do we mean by this?
We are helping churches and church leaders to understand what dementia is, how to effectively minister to those who are living with dementia and those who look after them, ensuring that groups and services are accessible to those living with dementia and to ensure that the church buildings are accessible.
We have produced a detailed guide to help church leaders understand how to make their church's more dementia friendly. We can also spend time, 1 to 1, with church leaders understanding the church context and suggesting ways to move forward, encouragement of Alzheimer's Society Dementia Friends awareness sessions to be run for all older people groups leaders and Lay Pastoral workers, encouragement and help on how to set up and run Dementia Friendly Services and Groups, provision of resources, and, where appropriate, help to develop links with other churches in the local area who are working to help provide services for those living with dementia.
We aim to raise awareness of what dementia friendly church is through the media including tv, radio and writing articles for Christian publications. We produce many tips and guides that help churches and their leaders to minister more deeply and meaningfully to those living with dementia and their families.

Just as I Am Services
A network of churches in one town are working together to take turns in running services specifically for those with dementia and memory loss. The services are multi-sensory and tactile and have a real impact on those attending
HELPING CHURCHES WORK TOGETHER

Networked Churches
How churches are beginning to meet together and plan services across a town to ensure that there is a consistent approach taken, regular dementia friendly services and organised ministries going into local care homes
HELPING CHURCHES WORK CONSISTENTLY
VOLUNTEER
Why not volunteer to become a Ambassador for Prama or, if that's too much why not become a Dementia Friend in your church. We can organise an awareness session in your church for your leadership team or group to help your church become more dementia friendly

Memory Boxes
A church set up a memory week day group. One of the activities they did was they brought together old photos from their younger days as part of a memory group. As they built up their memory boxes they talked and the memories came alive again. Setting up memory groups in churches really helps both the person to live well with dementia and their carers.

Organ Players Support
An organist in one church who had been playing for decades began to struggle with having to play and turn the pages because of their dementia. Rather than stopping her from playing a buddy was assigned to help her and to turn the pages and to tell her what hymns to play.
